Muscle is your Health 401k Plan
Muscle is your health 401K
If you recently had a child graduate (or a niece or nephew), then you need to be strength training, and OFTEN. ⠀
Once we hit our 40s we stand to lose a significant amount of muscle mass each year UNLESS we’re lifting weights and doing the work to to preserve (and even build!) our muscle. ⠀
Muscle matters—and it really is our health 401k plan. ⠀
When women go through the menopause transition, somewhere in our 40s to early 50s, we stand to *involuntarily* lose significant muscle mass (around 10% if we’re not lifting or taking steps to preserve muscle). ⠀
This loss of muscle, or sarcopenia, starts a few years before we even hit menopause, then accelerates in the 5 years afterwards without an intervention 😱 ⠀
This means we have to WORK to make and keep our muscle, ie: lift weights. ⠀ No, bodyweight and resistance band training will not be 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩—we need heavy external loads (weights!) to create and preserve muscle. ⠀
Why does this even matter? ⠀
More muscle = stronger bones—heavy strength training helps stress bones & stimulate better bone density. ⠀
More muscle = better balance and stability—which means less chance of falling & getting injured. ⠀
If you’re strength training consistently, you’re also protecting your brain: just 30 minutes of strength training stimulates the release of the hormone irisin which has been shown to positively impact cognition and may help stave off Alzheimer’s/dementia. ⠀
If you’re investing time and energy into strength training, you’re also more likely to be motivated to prioritize eating more protein—and that will help preserve that muscle & support more stable blood sugar levels throughout the day. ⠀
This = a stronger immune system less risk of metabolic disease (eg: diabetes, heart disease). ⠀
More muscle = being able to have a High Quality of Life—being able to ENJOY yourself, engage in activities you love like skiing, hiking, and keeping up with your kids and/or grandkids. ⠀
Investing in having more muscle NOW means you’ll have more personal freedom LATER—to live independently, enjoy your retirement, traveling and having fun rather than visiting the doctor.
